Introduction

Horse racing, given the status of royal game at the era of British rule in India has now days spread its wings even wider and is showing the growth in leaps and bounds. Opposite to what it stood for in the past these days Horse racing has become popular even in the life of a common man who live a simple life. The credit for this paradigm shift of the expansion of Horse racing into the life of common man goes to the joint continuous efforts of the Government of India and Turf Authorities of India limited.

Still a lot of scope is there for more improvements to make way into this sport. Still the sport is considered very much close to the society consisting of businessmen and high ranking officials and influential personalities. The sport is still eyed upon as a mere entertainment business by people who are not yet friendly with this sport.

The Reasons

The reasons behind this game to be considered as a mere entertainment business and a sport for only the Porsche society are various. Let us have a look at few of these rationales which explain the current stand of the game:

The broadcast of the game is still very much appalling. It is nowhere even close to the media coverage received by the popular Cricket, Hockey, Tennis or other championships in the country. Even the news channels don’t act to the results at even the biggest of the racing championships.

• Betting Related To The Game
This is the only game which has legalized betting procedures under the Indian law which makes it completely different from other games. Many people found this betting procedure too much confusing and hence stayed away from the game. Proper actions have to be taken by Turf Authorities to spread awareness about the Betting Tips and rules of the game to the common man through any form of media possible.

• Not Enough Infrastructure
India today is home to 9 licensed racecourses across the country which is too less a number when compared to Cricket or Hockey stadiums. Also no proper training facilities are available in all the cities. One has to join the recognized training centers located only at few cities across India to become a professional jockey.

The Solution

At this point in time awareness in the masses seems to be the only feasible solution to bring the stature of this game to a more respected and recognized level. It is not that the Horserace events don’t receive enough audiences but it deserves far better than the current scenario.
The word has to be spread to each and every citizen of India and media has a huge role to play as it always does. The newspapers should report results of ongoing races and future events and someone has to broadcast these races too. Maybe sponsors coming into the action can be very much influential in attracting the channels towards these events. It is not impossible but surely lot of work is still to be done.
