Jharkhand attained statehood on 15th November 2000. Jharkhand was a part of Bihar before 24 districts were separated to form the state. Ranchi is the capital of Jharkhand and Hindi is the most widely spoken language here. The name Jharkhand literally translates to "The land of forests".


About Jharkhand

Jharkhand is believed to have existed even before the Magadha Empire came to power. During the Mughal rule, this place was referred as Kukara. The tribal population here is believed to have played a pivotal role in the Indian Independence
Movement.


Where Is Jharkhand

Jharkhand is located in the eastern part of India. It is surrounded by West Bengal on the east, Orissa on the south, Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh on the west and Bihar on the north.

Places to Visit

Jharkhand is rich in flora and fauna collection. The vast green cover over this region has enabled animals to co-exist with nature. The Latehar district in Jharkhand houses the 250-sq-km Betla National Park. Bisons, Sambhars, Tigers, Pythons, Elephants, Wild Boars, Rabbits, Foxes, Monkeys and Deers can be spotted in the Betla National Park.


The Palamu Tiger Reserve is one of the nine original tiger reserves in India. Apart from Tigers, there are over 140 species of birds, Leopards, Elephants and Gaur. The Hazaribagh Wildlife sanctuary is another attraction in the state.


Rarappa, Deogarh, Parasnath Hills, Baidnath Temple and Sitagarha Hill are some of the sacred places to visit in Jharkhand. The Buddhist shrine in Sitagarha Hills is famous in Jharkhand.


Nakshatra Van, Khandoli Park near Giridh, Sun Temple near Jharkhand, and Dasham Falls near Taimara are some of the tourist attractions in Jharkhand.


Some very famous festivals that are celebrated with pomp in the state are Kali Puja, Durga Puja, Jitia Puja, Karma Puja and Sahrul. The PoushMela and the Tusu Fair are also very popular in the state. Baidnath Temple and Hundru Falls are also famous tourist destinations of Jharkhand.


How to Reach

Air: There is a domestic terminal at Ranchi which plies regular flights to major Indian cities. To travel to international destinations, flights can be boarded at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.


Rail: Ranchi railway station is the major railway station in Jharkhand. The railway lines connect other major cities in the country effectively. There are railway stations at Dhanbad, Bokaro, Jamshedpur and Giridh as well.


Road: The state is connected by 12 National Highways and many State Highways. All the cities in Jharkhand ply regular buses to nearby states.
