Daman And Diu - Where Is It
Daman and Diu, before it was declared as Union Territory in the year 1961, was under the Portuguese rule. Goa and Daman and Diu were combined Union Territories before Goa gained statehood in 1987. The Daman and Diu comprises of Daman district and Diu district. Daman and Diu served as the base for the Portuguese when it came to opium export to China.
Fishing is one of the most important occupations here. Though small in terms of area, Daman and Diu can be a good weekend getaway site. Gujarathi, Marathi, English and Hindi are the most commonly spoken language here. Portuguese and French are on the decline.
Daman and Diu are two separate enclaves surrounded by sea on one side and Gujarat on the others. Daman is near Surat and Diu is near Junagarh.

Fort of Moti Daman, built by the Portuguese in the year 1851 AD, housed a sizeable number of Portuguese gentry and several other official buildings during their rule.
Devka Beach in Nani Daman and Jampore Beach in Big Daman are the two beaches that offer sublime solitude and a wonderful experience with nature. The Jampore beach is a perfect spot for swimming as the tides here are low and danger free.
Shopping in a Union Territory is a good experience, considering how most products are not taxed heavily. Beach side shopping is one of the favorite pastimes of tourists visiting Daman and Diu.
Daman and Diu has other attractions like Daman Ganga tourist complex, Jetty garden, Kadaiya Lake garden and Mirasol Water Park. These are mainly weekend tourist attractions and bring in about 4 Lakh tourists every year to this place.
How To Reach
Air: The closest airport to Daman and Diu is in Surat, which is connected to other major cities in India. In case of international travel, the nearest airport is the Chhatrapathi Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai, from where regular flights ply to international destinations.
Rail: The Veraval and Vapi railway stations are close to Daman and Diu. The Veraval railway station connects the UT with other Gujarati cities like Vadodara and Rajkot. Vapi railway station connects the UT with cities from other states in the country.
Road: Daman and Diu is well connected to both Gujarat and Maharashtra by the national highways that cut through the Union Territory. Mumbai is 193 km and Ahmedabad is 367 km from Daman by road. Auto Rickshaws and cabs can be hired to commute within Daman and Diu.
