Councillor Calls For More Living Walls

Green wall systems are becoming an increasingly common sight in the UK and elsewhere around the world. Indeed, more of these creations may appear in Reading if a politician based in the area gets his way.

According to the BBC, Green Party councillor Jamie Whitham has suggested that the town could reduce its air pollution by almost a third and enhance public health by installing more green walls.

He stated that Reading should follow the example of London by planting walls with vegetation to cut down on pollution. Responding to the suggestion, a Reading Borough Council spokesman said the organisation was looking forward to hearing more about the idea.

The BBC pointed out that a study conducted by a team at Imperial College London revealed green wall systems can reduce air pollution by up to 30 per cent. Levels of both nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter can be cut and these substances are known to be harmful to human health.
