High blood pressure is a very common disease and, medications become essential to bring it under control. However, some of the natural remedies become sufficient in controlling high BP in families having a family history of hypertension.

Nothing could be better if any disease can be controlled with the natural supplements. Therefore, let us discuss some high blood pressure natural remedies:

Nutritional changes:

DASH (dietary approaches to stop hypertension) - DASH diet helps in risk reduction and in controlling elevated pressure of the blood. It emphasizes on the increased consumption of whole grains, poultry, fish, nuts, etc. It also helps when you are overweight or underweight.

Reducing sodium/salt intake: Foods having a low content of salt and sodium are helpful during hypertension. According to the National Institute of Health, it is recommended to take less than 2.4mgs of sodium per day. One should also avoid processed, foods, junk foods and fried foods.

Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)- it is found in flaxseeds, walnuts, soybean and dark green leafy vegetables.

Omega-3 fatty acids- salmon, sardines, cod liver oil, walnuts and tofu are good source of this fatty acid.

Co-enzyme Q10- it is generally found in fish and organ meats like liver, kidney, heart, whole grain germs, etc.

Herbs and some other home remedies for hypertension:

Cocoa: studies have proved that hot cocoa is helpful in preventing and controlling high blood pressure. It is because it has polyphenols which exhibit anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-atherogenic properties. However, cocoa is found very less in the diet and this you need to get it from chocolate. Keep in mind that chocolates are of high energy content.

Garlic: if garlic is taken on time, it exhibits its anti-cholesterol properties. The recommended dosage is 1-2 capsules twice a day. It helps in reducing artery spasms, slowing the pulse and modifying heart rhythm. Doctor consultation is advisable before you take this.

Rauwolfia: with an Indian name as sarpagnadha, this herb contains alkaloids which are used in the treatment of high blood pressure. The alkaloids in it, control nerve impulses along some pathways. Oral dosage of sarpagandha for adults is 50-100 mg tablets per day.

Yoga and breathing exercise: relaxation techniques like yoga along with breathing exercises help in relaxing and reducing stress levels. The two suggested poses for hypertension patients are-

Shavasana or the corpse pose
Sukhasana or the easy pose

Besides this, laughter is a very good relaxing therapy. You should be in contact with more and more people, nurture love and affection with them. Soon, you will see that your stress levels are greatly reduced and you are successful in bringing your hypertension under control.
