People belonging to different religions like Hindu, Christian, Muslim and various communities have adopted Mehandi as a beautifying factor, conditioner and dye for hair by both men and women.In Tamil Nadu it is called by the name Maruthani. Mehandi ceremony is celebrated a day prior to the actual wedding day as an important pre- wedding ritual in almost all Hindu families across India. It is in a way the first of the ornaments worn by the soon to be bride. Female relatives, friends and acquaintances apply Mehandi on bride’s hands and legs. This event is considered as auspicious and enhances the celebration mood, which is popularly known as ‘Mehandi Ceremony' or ‘Mehndi Ki Raat'.
