If you were to be asked to evaluate a digital scale thoroughly you would have found it to be quite a challenge. This despite the fact that you do "evaluate" more complex products quite regularly such as when you buy a car or a computer.

The fact is that as an individual we have neither the knowledge or the resources to really evaluate a technical product. In the case of cars we are only presented with options that have already been determined to be roadworthy by the administration. For other products where under performance is not likely to lead to a grave situation it may be left to the individual to evaluate and they do that as best as they can but usually also go by opting for a reputed brand since that is a simpler way to assure oneself of the quality of the product.

For digital scales it is the same story. And since in commercial transactions an under performing scale can cause serious problems the administration gives you the option of NTEP scales which have been evaluated by the administration.

At the heart of a truly high quality load cell are the load cells. These in turn have several key components. One is the metal part which actually gets stressed leading to a strain. The other are the strain gauges that measure the amount of strain that has been caused very accurately. The adhesive used to fix the strain gauges on to the metal component plays a key role as well and if the top quality is not used it can lead to the scale failing the NTEP endurance related tests.

So reliable are NTEP scales that they are bought by people who are not required by law to use a legal for trade scale but just to have the peace of mind with respect to a key piece of equipment they opt for an NTEP scale.
