A Trip To Jodhpur
Rajasthan is an amazing state and every corner of this royal state exhibits royal elegance and grandeur. Make a tour of any part of Rajasthan, you will return with loads of cherishable memories of a lifetime. A trip to Jodhpur is no exception. Jodhpur is the second largest city of the state after Jaipur which is the state capital. The city is situated 335 Km away from Jaipur. As Jodhpur is centrally located housing several historic and architectural marvels of the past, it has evolved as a popular travel destination in Rajasthan. Often referred to as The Gateway to Thar due to its proximity to the Thar Desert, or as The Sun City due to its sunny days all-round the year, Jodhpur is also fondly known as the Blue City as all the houses in the city are painted in indigo blue. These blue buildings dot the landscape near the Mehrangarh Fort due to which the city has a unique look and feel. The old city of Jodhpur is built around the Mehrangarh Fort and is bound by a huge wall with several gates. However, as the city experienced a boom over the past several decades, the newer parts of the city are developed outside the confines of ...
... this wall.
Jodhpur is a historic city, founded by Rao Jodha in the year 1459 AD, as the new capital of the state of Marwar, replacing the older capital of Mandore. Mehrangarh Fort, Moti Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Phool Mahal, Zenana Deodi, Chammunda Mataji Temple, Jaswant Thada, Mandore, Umaid Bhavan Palace, Khejarla Fort, Balsamund Lake, Ranisar Padamsar, Baba Ramdev Temple, Mahamandir Temple, Ganesh Temple and Old city among others. A visit to the local market is also quite interesting. While visiting Jodhpur, quite a few travellers also include the nearby destinations of Udaipur and Pushkar in their tour and tourists can also enjoy desert safaris, camel and elephant safaris and other such activities.
Mehrangarh Fort is the largest fort in Rajasthan and one of the largest in India. Sprawling atop a hill, the fort dominates the entire city and offers a spectacular 360 degree view. The huge ramparts surrounding the fort stretch to some 3 km. In fact, the name fort seems to be a misnomer for this mammoth structure complete with gardens, temples and the MaharajaâEUR(TM)s palace. Some of the most remarkable constructions here are Moti Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Phool Mahal, Chamunda Mataji Temple, and Zenana Deodi.
Umaid Bhawan Palace is also a travel hot spot and prime attraction of the city. Built by Maharaja Umaid Singh in 1944, Umaid Bhawan is amongst the last of the greatest palaces of India. A unique feature of the palace is its distinctively British architecture, which reflects the taste of the maharaja for a colonial way of life. A major portion of this palace has been converted into a luxury heritage hotel, while a museum has been made into a museum. Rest of the portion is used by descendants of the Maharaja who stay here even today.
Jodhpur is also a popular destination among the tourists for its beautiful handicrafts, tie and dye textiles, embroidered leather shoes, antiques, puppets, carpets, Rajasthani textiles, clay figurines and classic silver jewellery. Handicrafts, spices or herbs and teas can also be obtained at this place as souvenirs. There are numerous handicrafts and handloom retailers across the city. Jodhpur is also famous for its unique culinary fare like the Makhaniya Lassi, Mawa Kachori and Mirchibada. The purchasing spot of this city is found in Nai Sadak and Sardar Sector.
Jodhpur is well connected with main metropolitan areas by road, rail and air. Jodhpur has an airport located five kilometres from the main city and possesses regular flight services to Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur and Udaipur. Jodhpur rail network arrives under that of the North Western Zone and it is connected with all the metro cities of India. The buses of RSRTC and private luxury motor vehicles connect this with important nearby cities.
