Introduction

The Horse Racing in India might not be as popular as Cricket or Hockey but it is strengthening its roots in the hearts of many fans day after day. There has been a lot of improvement in much aspect of Horse Racing like its format, the racecourses, the infrastructure, the training provided to Horses and Jockeys, the management of events etc. All these things has improved a lot over the past few years that has helped in raising the status of Horse Racing in India to a significant level.

But still there is lot of scope for improvement left if our standards are compared to the International Horse racing events. Especially the training and infrastructure part has to go a long way in reaching up to the mark according to the International standards of racing.

The Racecourses of India

India has been home to 9 racecourses which are located namely at Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mysore, Kolkata, Chennai, Ooty and Delhi. Prior to independence these racecourses were managed and maintained by the British rulers and Indian sultans who used the Horse Racing as a source of entertainment and ...
... way to stay fit. Before, during and after the time of independence of India these racecourses were abandoned due to the other priorities.

In 1960s the racecourses again came to life with many Horses Racing tournaments being organized into them. These new tournaments were added on with the previously existing tournaments. The Turf Authorities came into action and paid heed towards the maintenance of these racecourses which is the reason for the facilities we see in today’s racecourses. New stands were built for more people to be incorporated to see the race. Number of Tote booth for betting purpose was also increased.

The Training of Horses and Jockeys

Soon the Turf Authorities realized the importance of proper training of Horses and jockeys to have more interesting fixtures that can attract a potentially large crowd towards the racecourses. Thus training facility was strengthened and trainers were called from other countries to teach the tips and tricks. Also the veterans from the sport were asked for help which they readily provided.

Now days one can hear the noise of Horse galloping through the race track mixed with people cheering for their favourite Horse to win the race even from outside of the racecourses. The sport has started taking turn and has turned out to be a passion for many people belonging to high class and even middle class.

The Commercialization Effect

With the coming of big sponsors into the scene the scope of the sports has widened even more than expected. Many big names of the market are ready to put in money into this sport as it is the only one for which betting is legalized under the Indian law. The coming of sponsors to this sport can also be due to involvement of high class people as the members of the racing clubs of India.

The commercialization has lead to better facilities at the racecourses, better prizes for the events which attracts the immediate attention of jockeys and they are pumped up to perform better at the races which in turn attracts more crowd towards the glories of Horseracing.
