A Beautiful City Built On Marshland
Cork is derived from the Irish word Corcaigh or the marsh. This huge Ireland city was once a marshland where boats were used to steer into the channels separating the numerous islands. As a matter of fact, Cork’s commercial focal point, the St Patrick's Street, is built on one of these river channels. At present there are more than 30 bridges over the two River Lee channels making Cork’s city centre appear like an arrow-shaped island. This rather small city centre is best enjoyed on foot and rarely tourists are seen using public transport.
