As man evolved, so have his machines. Today, each object is measured against the usability and utility factor and its price is not tagged along. Transgressing from the handheld tools to these high-techs, hefty machineries, and man has created machines to ease manual dependency, and to increase efficiency. One of the major inventions has been the pumps. These were designed to displace liquid from one place to another with the help of mechanical assistance. One of their varieties is the suction pumps. These devices can be defined as the apparatuses that can increase the level of the fluid by suction. This suction is created from the piston moving in a cylinder. These machines find themselves involved in the regulation of fluid movement. These devices help in the maintenance of the threshold so that there is no overflowing and no wastage.

History

The very first of these machines was found to be described by the Phylo of Byzantium in the 2nd century BC. The first kind was a force pump and was inundated in water. The benefit of this device was its ability to displace the necessary amount of water ...
... to any specific height that is consistent with the apparatus. This also depends on the exit pipe that is being used and its ability to maintain the hydrostatic pressure. However, this variety also had its drawbacks. Firstly, the pumping machine was immersed in water and this meant that if the water level dropped, the cylinder would not be refilled. The solution to this problem was the installation of a suction device at the inlet pipe. This would enable the machine to be positioned above the water and thereby accommodate by itself to the changing water levels.

The second type was first launched in the 15th century. It was first cited in the writings of Martini and Tacola and already had a suction pipe installed. This device’s components like the cylinder and the piston was constructed from a wood. There was no delivery tube and the water was released from an exit.
There was another mention of these kinds of machines in the Al-Jazari’s Book of Machines. Written in 1206, this book also described an apparatus that played a substantial role in the development of modern engineering.

Functionality

These kind works on the following principle: It would be pumping air away from an encompassed area, and thereby create a partial vacuum. Once the air is withdrawn from the area, the vacuum enforces the liquid to rise in the area where the machine is functioning. This helps in the transference of the liquid from one place to another.

How do they work?

In the end suction pumps, vacuum is created to pull fluid through a hose. Working on the same principles as a straw, these equipments finds its usages in medical sectors and other commercial sectors. These are easy to use devices, only when its users are aware of its usages.

Whatever the kind, these machines have proven to be a great help. They have helped in the transferring of liquids without much ado. They have reduced wastage and ensured to increase the efficacy. From the multistage pumps to its other varieties, each of these devices is designed to serve specific purposes.
