Another very interesting story associated with Gateway of India is that the last British troop that left India after Indian independence in the 1947 year left through Gateway of India only. The Gateway carries indo-saracenic architecture derived both from Islamic and Hindu style architectural patterns.

Haji Ali Mosque – Standing magnificently in the midst of the Arabian Ocean, Haji Ali Mosque is prayer place for Muslims. The Mosque (referred as Dargah in Urdu) was constructed in the remembrance of a Muslim trader, Sayeed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari and eventually named after him as Haji Ali Dargah. It is estimated that an average footfall to the Dargah on any day is at least 35,000 people. The Mosque remains closed during the high tide time as the waves in ocean are quite strong around that time and make it impossible to walk on the 500 yard long bridge that connects the shrine property in Mumbai to the bay.

Elephanta Caves – Elephanta Caves are situated on the Elephanta Island located only 11 km away from Colaba Mumbai. It is conveniently approachable by a motor boat that takes only 30 minutes to transport to the island. The island houses seven most splendid rock caves dating back to 4th to 9th centuries, A.D. The caves depict some of the most thrilling artworks in the form of Hindu lords all crafted using cave rocks. Elephanta Caves is one of the most ancient Mumbai properties that have been declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Hanging Gardens – Also termed as Ferozeshah Mehta Gardens, Hanging Gardens age back to the year 1880. These are the terraced gardens named after a renowned lawyer, Charter Sir Ferozeshah Mehta. The gardens give a magnificent view of the sunset at Arabian Sea. In spite of being highly frequented by visitors and early morning joggers, the gardens are well maintained and lush green.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus – Truly an art marvel, Chattarapati Shivaji Terminus (also known as Victoria Terminus) is perhaps India’s busiest and most unique railway station. It connects Mumbai to most other parts of the country. The terminus carries a unique stone dome along with beautifully designed turrets and arches truly unique to their style. UNESCO has declared the terminus as a World Heritage Site.
