Why Visit Thailand?-00-2213
Thailand has endured scads in the past 5 years. There was the 2004 tsunami, the 2006 takeover that exiled Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, the 2008 revolt that sealed off Suvarnabhumi International Airport and caused Thaksin's brother-in-law to step down, and the Santika Nightclub fire on New Years Eve.
Tourism suffered in 2008 and, with the current economic situation of plight, it looks like 2009 and 2010 will also be hard on Bangkok and the rest of Thailand.
The current Prime Minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva, has his work cut out for him. His British schooling will do nothing at all to get Thailand back on track.
Prime Minister Abhisit will have to satisfy the rest of Asia that Thailand is once again a safe place for tourists. At the same time, he will have to work diligently to create jobs in Thailand.
Fewer Thailand travelers will have a monetary impact on the country, not only in the accommodation and amusement markets, but also in all of the smaller enterprises that depend on .
Taxi and bus drivers, food , tour operators, guesthouse workers, waiters and waitresses, warehouse help, and ...
... other small business owners will either be unemployed or will not be able to last without tourists.
I visited Phuket one day after the airport re-opened and the country looked like a ghost town. I went to Thailand 10 days after 9-11, during the SARS outbreak, and during the bird flu scare. Never have I seen tourist towns so empty. This was supposed to be "high season", when tourists come from cold country and enjoy the people and areas of Thailand. But, the tourists went to the Philippines.
If this direction continues, Thailand's economy will suffer for a long time and millions will be out of work. Mr. Abhisit needs to act soon to tell Europeans that Thailand is a secure locationarea to visit and that Thailand is still the Land of Smiles.
Generally, I feel that Thailand is still a great place to see. The Thai people are the nicest, the cuisine is spicy and a bargain, and bargain hunting cannot be beat.
Don't let the political squabbles stop you from visiting Thailand. Enjoy the weather, the people, and the food.
