Whiskey is a general term used to describe a type of distilled alcoholic beverage that is made from a grain mash that has been fermented. Grains used are barley, malted barley, corn, when, rye, and malted rye. Whiskey is usually aged in charred oak barrels. Before getting into the details of our Top Ten Whiskey Brands, it must be mentioned that when this beverage is spelled “whisky”, it usually refers to a whiskey that has been made in Scotland; Scottish whisky is made with malted barley. Whiskey on the other hand (notice the “e” in the spelling) refers to all whiskeys made outside of Scotland; these can ...
... be made from a variety of grains.

Therefore, our Top Ten Whiskey Brands list focuses exclusively on these delightful distilled drinks that come from places other than Scotland; for a list of the best Scottish whiskies, have a look at www.icohol.com. All prices are approximate and are in U.S. dollars.

10. Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit ($50)
Country of Origin: U.S.
Whiskey type: Bourbon

Starting our list is the classic American bourbon whiskey which is based on corn. Beautifully viscous, this brown sugar and nutmeg aroma whiskey also has citrus flavors making it a real delight.

9. Pappy Van Winkle’s 23-Year-Old ($250)
Country of Origin: U.S.
Whiskey type: Bourbon

Sweet, smooth, and tastes of honey and toffee due to the fact it’s made of wheat mash rather than corn. Well worth the high price tag.

8. Four Roses Small Batch ($35)
Country of Origin: U.S.
Whiskey type: Bourbon

Just because this one is cheaper doesn’t mean they’ve crafted an inferior bourbon. Understated with sweet oak and caramel with a velvety vanilla finish.

7. Canadian Club Reserve 10 Year ($16.45)
Country of Origin: Canada
Whiskey type: Rye

Canadian whiskeys are starting to get more and more recognition: Taken neat, flavours include vanilla, dark fruit, leather fruitcake and walnuts. This is also fabulous in a Rye and Gingerale Hiball.

6. Crown Royal Reserve ($55)
Country of Origin: Canada
Whiskey type: rye

Crown Royal Reserve is described as “heaven” when about 2 ounces are poured in a glass over ice.

5. Canadian Club 30 Year ($200 +)
Country of Origin: Canada
Whiskey type: rye

Incredibly hard to find nowadays, this is the best of the Canadian whiskeys and can be considered one of the best whiskeys world-wide. Smooth and with a strong oak character.

4. Tyrconnell 10 Year Old Single Malt Sherry Cask Finish Irish Whiskey ($100)
Country of Origin: Ireland
Whiskey type: malted barley

With a surprising hint of cinnamon in its tasting notes, Tyrconnell’s single malt is a beverage that everyone must try at least once. Simply sublime.

3. Connemara 12 Year Old Peated Single Malt Irish Whiskey ($80)
Country of Origin: Ireland
Whiskey type: malted barley

Golden honey notes and deep peat are what set this whiskey apart from its competitors; hints of chocolate, oak and vanilla leave tasters wanting more.

2. Jameson Rarest Vintage Reserve Whiskey ($530)
Country of Origin: Ireland
Whiskey type: malted barley

Mellow sweetness and toasted wood characterize the Rarest Vintage Reserve; a fruity richness from the port casks blends well with the creamy texture. Divine.

And our favorite whiskey brand is...

Bushmills 21 Year Old Single Malt Irish Whiskey ($110)
Country of Origin: Ireland
Whiskey type: malted barley
Luxurious with a satin texture, this is an intense whiskey with a delightful liquorice and oak finish. Professional tasters say the whiskey has the aroma of exotic spices, crème brulée, and honeyed fig-cakes. It’s also dry yet fruity, making this the perfect whiskey to take neat or with just the smallest drop of water to release all of its subtle flavours.
