Speaking to the New Zealand Herald, Sanda Lawton revealed she left her native country to seek childcare roles overseas and was able to earn decent money.

Thanks to her grandmother’s Irish passport, she was allowed to work in England, which she did for a while. Following this, she moved to Hong Kong for two years where she looked after the child of a Chinese and New Zealand couple.

Talking about her experiences, she said: “The little girl was seven months old when I started and two years old when I finished. She spoke in English to her mother and Cantonese to her father, and went to a bilingual preschool.”

Drawing attention to one of the advantages of taking childcare jobs abroad, she added: “I learned to understand another culture.” Meanwhile, in a word of advice to other women considering spreading their wings in this way, she remarked: “The world is your oyster.”

She added: “The family are looking to take someone on to look after their most precious asset, their child - you need to have confidence to know you can do that. Each child is different, so you have to work with different personalities. If you earn the respect of the children very quickly then there’s no problem.”

These days, there are many opportunities available to those seeking childcare jobs in foreign countries and English speakers are in particularly high demand. After all, this remains the language of international commerce.
