Unfortunately the purchase of cheap travel, whether cheap airplane tickets, discount hotel rooms, or cheap vacation packages does not ensure that the trip itself will be a positive experience.

The following are steps Reader’s Digest recommends that can improve the quality of your time in the air:

• Do not leave your bag in an overhead compartment if it does not properly fit in the available space.

• While fellow passengers can be occasionally rude, it is important that you keep control of your emotions and how you react to other people’s inappropriate actions.

• If you are traveling with a child and continue to hear bells ringing, please check to see if your child is playing with the flight attendant call button.

• Airplane lavatory doors are opened simply by pushing on them.

• Make certain that you properly anticipate your needs before boarding a plane. Parents with a baby need to bring diapers. Diabetics often need syringes. People with high blood pressure need to remember to bring their medication.

• Be considerate of your fellow passengers and do not clip ...
... your toenails, snore loudly, or fool around with a fellow passenger under a blanket.

• If traveling abroad, make certain that you keep a pen handy to fill out immigration forms.

• Do not try to go to the bathroom while attendants have a food cart in the aisle.

• Be polite and respond to flight attendants when they say hello or goodbye.

• Do not poke or grab attendants as they walk down the aisle.

• Flight attendants are not allowed to place your luggage in overhead bins for you because of injury risk. However, they are able to “assist” a passenger in need of help.

• Passengers are always allowed to use the bathroom on the ground so long as the plane is not moving or getting ready to take off shortly.

• Collect your trash prior to a flight attendant coming by to pick it up.

• Do not get upset at flight attendants about waiting for a wheelchair. Airports are responsible for providing this service, and some do a much better job than others.
