The ‘island of a thousand temples’, almost 20,000 on the last count. Religion here is a subtle blend of Hinduism and animism, where the gods of the volcanoes, nature, forests and paddy fields play an important role. No tour package to Bali can possibly include all of them; try and visit at least a couple. As markers of Balinese culture and identity, Bali's temples demonstrate the health and vibrance of Bali's local communities.

Your Bali holiday will be incomplete without Besakih Temple (Mother Temple) is considered one of the most important temples in Bali and is over 1000 years old. When Mount Agung erupted in 1963 (killing 1,700 people) the lava flows missed the temple by metres, which is seen as a miracle and a sign from the gods. The Tanah Lot Temple meaning "Land in the Middle of the sea" sits just off the coast on a rock and is probably the most famous of Bali's temples.

Your Bali Holiday will be incomplete without a trip to the Pura Luhur (Uluwatu) and Goa Lawah (Bat Cave) Temples , the most popular directional temples protecting Bali from evils spirits. The Pura Tirta Empul is another important one ...
... dating back to 926 AD. The spring water here is sacred and thought to have healing properties.

The most visually stunning temple in Bali, Rambut Siwi sits above a cliff, overlooking the Indian Ocean and is guarded by statues of wild boars and dragons, dedicated to the Goddess of Knowledge, Saraswati and the Rice Goddess Sri. Ulun Danu, Taman Ayun Temple in Mengwi, Lempuyang and Gunung Kawi temples are also worthwhile stops in your tour package to Bali.

During your Bali Holidays, remember the Balinese are far more conservative than most Westerners; they frown on public displays of affection. Dress as modestly as possible when visiting temples. Both men and women are expected to wear shirts that cover shoulders and part of the upper arms. The following leg coverings are mandatory for both men and women preparing to enter a Balinese temple :

Sarong (also known locally as kain kamben) around your legs

Temple scarf (known as a selendang) around your waist

All the temples are truly amazing and must visit. If you are planning for a Bali tour, don’t forget to add temples visit in your itinerary for Bali. Or book a Bali tour package which includes temples in itinerary.
