The name Kozhikode derives from "Koyil", which means Palace and "Kota", which means Fort. Often referred to by its old name of Calicut, this was a very important city in Malabar in the past. The city is a famous district in Kerala. Many people know this place by diverse names, as Kalikooth in Arab, as Kallikkottai in Tamil and as Kalifo in Chinese. The city however is more commonly known by its Anglicized version "Calicut". Vasco Da Gama discovered it in 1948, when his portages navigator exposed the same accidentally. This place is also famous for being the first sea route discovered to reach India by the outside world.
