What Can You Do With Vps Hosting?
A VPS is a virtual private server, which is essentially a portion of a dedicated server that’s rented out to one customer and one customer only. While this is a fairly simple concept, it can still confuse those that aren’t familiar with this type of hosting. What can you really do with a VPS if it’s part of a larger server? Is it any different than shared? And if so, is it any different than dedicated web hosting?
A VPS is different than both shared and dedicated hosting, and is an entirely unique type of web hosting. While VPS is like shared in the way that many different accounts can reside on one main web server, those accounts are virtually separated through technology known as a hypervisor, which ensures that one website’s activity does not have any effect on any other website on the server.
A shared server will never come equipped with a hypervisor, because shared servers are not virtually separated and so when one website makes changes to the server, it will affect all websites on that server.
This is the real advantage of VPS hosting. The ...
... virtual partitions ensure that one webmaster can do whatever they wish with their website and not have it affect any other site or account. This allows webmasters to install custom software, send limitless amounts of email, stream live media, and install custom configurations – things you’d never be able to do with shared hosting.
The only real difference between VPS and dedicated hosting is that with a VPS the server is not reserved for just one website, or one account the way it is with a dedicated server, even though it may act like it.
There is actually one other difference between VPS web hosting and dedicated hosting – that’s the price you’ll pay. Dedicated hosting is known as one of the most expensive types of hosting you could choose, as you do need to rent out an entire server and all of its space and resources. This is not necessary however with a VPS and so, web hosts are able to offer this type of hosting at a significantly smaller cost.
VPS is often a smart move to make for website owners that find their website has been receiving a much larger amount of traffic; or want to expand their website with videos, pictures, or anything else that would take a lot of resources. VPS can be a nice transition without worrying about the high cost of dedicated hosting.
What can you do with VPS? Just about anything you want to! Having your own server, even if it’s a “server within a server” puts the control of your website back in your hands. Because no website should be limited by its resources, or its web server.
