Some of the concern regarding Weight Loss Surgery is easing as more and more doctors see the positive affects such procedures can have on patients who had previously given up on the idea that they could attain a healthy weight. Lap Band Surgery, in particular, is appealing because it is the least invasive form of weight loss surgery and it can be reversed.

The goal of lap-band surgery is to achieve and maintain a weight loss of 60%-80% of excess body weight. The majority of patients who have the procedure will achieve significant, sustained weight loss. Studies have shown that any significant degree of sustained weight loss is of benefit to obesity-related health problems such as diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, high cholesterol and arthritis.

Lap-band surgery is a minimally invasive procedure wherein a band is inserted around the upper portion of the stomach. The ensuing change to the shape of the stomach controls the amount of food that can be digested at one time. Patients feel satisfied having ...
... consumed much less food.

During this weight loss surgery, a video camera is attached to a telescope allowing surgeons to see inside the abdominal cavity. Gas is used to provide the space for the lap-band to be placed around the upper stomach. An adjustment port is attached by tubing which allows doctors to adjust the size of the opening between the upper and lower stomach. The resulting weight loss depends on both the early satiety enhanced by the lap-band and the patient's motivation and commitment to a new lifestyle and eating habits.

Studies confirm that those who are successful in losing weight through weight loss surgery reduce their risk of experiencing an obesity-related illness by more than 50%. This is significant, as close to 60% of the canadian population is overweight or obese.

The lap-band has been approved for use by health canada since 1998 and is a tested and proven tool in combating illnesses that develop in people who have been chronically overweight.
