The Salvia Divinorum is highly known for its herbal effects and of course its incredible adaptation to a new environment. However with that said, it does not imply that one simply assume that it can thrive independently for extended periods of time without setting it up appropriately to new conditions it is currently exposed to. Proper care is still very crucial in order to make sure that they flourish and are capable of reproduction if ever one decides to duplicate them. With the setup within ideal parameters, one can even expect this plant not only to be alive after a couple of weeks on its own but it will also be capable of growing vigorously.

The Need to Know Facts Prior to Care

One could say that one look at this plant, it definitely looks different from the typical plants and shrubs in an average garden. This is due to the appearance of its stems that are somewhat square-shaped rather than the usual round stems like most plants. In buying your very first Salvia Divinorum, chances are you are likely to receive a cutting rather than the entire plant itself and the cutting alone will be a dead ...
... give away showing its square shaped characteristic.

Another thing to note that makes this plant peculiar is that if one views a cutting on its end, it would appear that the stem is quite hollow unlike the usual stems of other plant where theirs are fully compact and woody. Apart from the hollow stem, it amazingly resembles a circular shape within the square borders of the cutting. A pretty astounding feature for a plant if one should think.

And Duplicating Reasons

Definitely buying this plant from any particular source would come to be very costly in the beginning but usually a cutting tends to be a lot cheaper compared to buying an entire plant. But whatever the case may be, one would want to ensure that that would be the first and the only cost in procuring a Salvia Divinorum because it can after all be duplicated from the original plant instead of buying another one.

Ensure Root Growth

As soon as receiving the Salvia Divinorum cutting, it would obviously be packaged in a very meticulous manner. Upon seeing the actual cutting, its either rooting already or not. If it were the former, orienting what should be the top and bottom would be easy. However if the roots are still absent, observe at what end has a lot of nodes and appears to be bulbous. That is the end of the cutting by which leaves and side shoots will eventually grow.

The root end must be soaked in lukewarm water for a while until roots start to appear but if they are already present, it can be planted in a pot that is wide enough to accommodate lengthening of the roots so as to avoid frequent repotting.

Avoid Root Rot

The most common cause of Salvia Divinorum root rot is excessive moisture in the soil and the lack of air contact down the roots. The soil composition in the pot must therefore have a layer by which it is just porous enough for water to seep out and evaporate and allow air to enter the bottom of the pot which must also have a little hole in the center. With that, an inch level of gravel would be sufficient.

Watch out for Stem and Side Shoot Breakage

One more thing that makes the Salvia Divinorum unique from most plants is that its process of reproduction is not through seeding. In the wild when the plant grows tall enough, the weight of the leaves would pull down the stem and branches and if heavy enough can cause snapping and breaking off. Due the hollowness of the stem and its branches the plant proves to be very weak in sustaining a tall posture. When the shoots and stem that break off come in contact with the soil, this would later result in the growth of a new batch of Salvia Divinorum.

In the case of the grower of the plant, ensuring that the stem is supported by a stake and watch the side shoots that are likely to snap would provide additional cuttings that can be planted for a new generation of Salvia Divinorum.
