Mumbai, the melting pot of various cultures and diversities is perhaps India’s one of the most important cities. It is a state capital and India’s financial hub and one of the world’s top 10 commerce centers based on the voluminous funds flow. The native dwellers of the city were fishing colonies that inhabited the place for its natural harbor. Later on Aryans came to settle in the city in order to trade with other countries like Persia and Egypt, naturally benefitting from its wide harbor. In the 16th century, Mumbai witnessed the arrival of Portuguese who marked major changes in the city. The city witnessed another upturn when it was gifted to British as a dowry when Portugal Princess Catherine de Braganza was married to King Charles II in the year 1661. Thereafter British continued to reap on its magnificent harbor till India attained its freedom on August 15th, 1947.

Mumbai is the core constitute of seven distinct islands (i.e. Colaba, Parel, Fort, Byculla, Worli, Mahim and Matunga) which have been reclaimed to constitute a single island narrowing at a point of rock at Colaba towards the southern extremity of ...
... the city. Located on the shores of Arabian Sea, Mumbai has been keeping up its pace with the stride of various Indian and foreign civilizations. As its history suggests, Mumbai has been a true gateway to various cultures, civilizations from across the globe. This is how it achieved its nature of being a true cosmopolitan city of India. Various Indian and foreign communities inhabit the place. There are Parsees, Arabs, Indo-Aryans, people from Koli communities, Hindu Bhandaries, English, Americans, Portuguese, Scottish and a whole potpourri of Indians from various states, speaking different languages and belonging to all sorts of religions.

Though a majority of city’s population speaks Marathi (which is its native language, spoken by nearly 40 per cent of inhabitants), it is due to a large number of immigrants, Indian and international, Mumbai has become a melting point of various cultures and diversities. Thence Hindi and English are two languages which are commonly spoken and understood by the masses.

To cater to the needs and interests of such a diversified population, city has many restaurants, pubs, discotheques, night clubs, theaters, beaches and a lot more. It is often said that Mumbai is a city that never sleeps. Well, it is rightly said because it perfectly represents the ever-evolving face of India where different religions and cultures walk hand in hand, maintaining a complete harmony with each other.

Another noticeable aspect of Mumbai is its diversified architecture. Being India’s second highest densely populated city, Mumbai realty mainly constitutes soaring skyscrapers standing majestically right next to the widespread slums. Mumbai’s Dharavi is Asia’s largest slum area. Mumbai realty’s unique and noticeable aspect is its Chawls. It is believed that Chawls were coined not to house but to warehouse workers and immigrants who came to Mumbai during its industrial evolution. These Chawls continue to cater to the needs of such high population and lower middle class working population of Mumbai ranging from Dabbawalas to Taxi drivers.
