Rio 2016
An official website of Rio 2016 has been created to provide news and information about Rio de Janeiro in Brazil as host city of the first Olympic and Paralympics Games in South America. The holding of the 2016 Games, officially known as the Games of the 31st Olympiad in the capital city of the State of Rio de Janeiro was announced at the 121st International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Copenhagen, Denmark on October 2, 2009. As announced, the Games will be held from August 5 to August 21, 2016, and the Paralympics from September 7 to September 18 of the same year. The logo for the Games, designed by Brazilian company Tatil Design, was the winning entry in a logo competition joined in by 139 agencies throughout the country. It was unveiled to the public by the city government on December 31, 2010.
Some 10,500 athletes from around the world are expected to participate in the Games that feature 28 sports and 42 disciplines, compared to the 22 sports to be contested in the Paralympics. Organizers have divided the venues for both events into four clusters ...
... of Copacabana, Barra, Deodoro and Maracaña. These are backed up by a mixture of existing, renovated, temporary and new facilities. Among the important facilities under preparation are the Olympic Village, Olympic Park and 49,750 rooms as required by the IOC, located in hotels, apartment hotels, cruise ships and condominium apartments throughout the city. These include the 8,500 cabins that will be provided by six modern cruise ships and the villages for media personnel from around the world. Olympic lanes will also be implemented to connect the four Olympic clusters to the Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport in addition to the existing corridors for the rail and Metro systems, major roads and motorways linking the three Olympic zones or clusters, and the Western passageway that will connect all the four clusters. Organizers will likewise implement a Comprehensive Security Operation for the security of the athletes and visitors.
The new venues that will be used for the Games include the Deodoro Arena for fencing, Olympic Aquatics Stadium for swimming and synchronized swimming, Olympic BMX Center for cycling, Olympic Tennis Center for tennis, the Olympic Training Center for basketball, judo and taekwondo, wrestling and handball competitions, Olympic Whitewater Stadium for canoe and kayak slalom, and the Reserva de Marupendi for golf. Existing and temporary venues will be used for the rest of the events that include track and field, equestrian, beach volleyball, triathlon, water polo, and modern pentathlon, among others. Football competitions will be held in four venues outside the confines of Rio de Janeio such as Salvador, Brazilia, Bello Horizonte and Sao Paulo.
The Paralympics follow a few days after the conclusion of the Olympics. Organizers also expect an estimate of 4,200 disabled athletes from 150 countries, featuring 22 sports, including the new events of paratriathlon and paracanoe. The Paralympics will be held in four major Olympic zones and other venues used by the preceding Games.
