Winter Landscape Design Lighting
When everything’s covered in snow there’s no color but white. Unless you’re a fan of reverse silhouettes, winter’s all-white landscape design theme can get a bit boring. Add color and ambiance to the landscape with some creative outdoor lighting.
Christmas lights
String Christmas lights come in all kinds of shapes and sizes and ready to be hung from snow-covered tree branches or looped around shrubs and evergreens. Wooden fences and usually plain concrete walls come to life with these colorful bulbs.
Fairy lights winding around a pergola’s beams or lattice roof make for a bright structure over your landscape design. Hung at the edges of a patio umbrella, fairy lights create a whimsical ambiance. Try slipping them inside various colored paper cups for a more colorful display hanging from the patio cover.
Christmas lights encased in safety tubing are another fun option for winter landscape design lighting. You can bend them into creative shapes and fashion a Christmas scene such as Santa on his sleigh with reindeers or a lighted snowman outline or any shape you choose. Imagination is the ...
... limit for tube lighting design.
Mason jar lamps
One of the things that can be done about mason jars is to turn them into glass lamps. Place a votive candle in several mason jars and use line them up on your patio walk or garden steps. Create light patterns on your landscape design with lighted mason jar lamps. They can also be hung from tree branches.
Fire and Ice Light Cubes
Add a touch of class to your winter-white lawn with fire and ice light cubes. They are easy to create and customize for any part of your lawn or patio. Purchase hollow glass cubes in two sizes. Put the smaller one into the larger one. Or for some real fire and ice, place your glass cubes inside a block of ice. You can fill the gap between the glass and ice with tinted water or dye the ice. Or you can leave it as it is. Position a votive candle or decorative pillar candle inside. Voila! Fire and ice light cubes. Striking statement pieces on a all-white landscape design. Variations can include wine glasses inside ice blocks or colored mason jars.
Kerosene lanterns
Kerosene lanterns or wrought iron lanterns are specifically for outdoor lighting and look great in any landscape design. Offering a warm orange candle-like glow, they are easily refilled and lighted. You can either use the classic black colored ones or paint them fire-engine red for a splash of color on your trees or around the snow-encrusted walk. If you like some shimmer, they can also be spray-painted in silver or gold. The great thing about kerosene lanterns is that they don’t get blown out by the wind.
Snow lanterns
Take advantage of all that ice and create snow lanterns. Pack snow into mounds like small igloos and carve in some hollow space enough to accommodate votive candles. Another option is to pack ice into Bundt pans. Allow the ice to harden the release them from the tap by slightly tapping. You can stack them over a lighted candle that has a trimmed wick so that the flame stays small. White on white landscape design sometimes works especially when there’s an orange flame included.
