A little consideration will show that daily life is impossible without some knowledge of maths. Mathematicians study many different branches of the discipline in many walks of life, from business management to space research and from actuarial science to computer science. Mathematics is indispensable in engineering, and students of biology, medicine, economics and sociology use the tools developed by mathematicians on a daily basis. A specialist in atmospheric science may develop a mathematical model to study the pattern of winds in a geographical area and predict weather. A good business manager could study the production and consumption patterns of a particular product, develop a mathematical model and suggest methods to increase company profits.

In maths, we use symbols extensively. From our earliest years, we are exposed to an array of numbers and mathematical operators, symbols that we don’t understand until we’re guided through the learning process. Equations, which, for the novice mathematician, seem little more than a muddle of numbers, symbols and letters, reveal logical information about physical phenomena, ...
... and a complicated physical phenomenon can be explained concisely by a set of equations, revealing the beauty and logic in all mathematics. And once you appreciate the beauty in maths, you begin to enjoy learning more about it!

Coming up to the exams, drawing up a set of postcards can also be a useful technique. Put a couple of key points in brightly coloured writing on each postcard to give you a last minute refresh before you go into the exam hall. Learn material in manageable bite sized chunks rather than trying to take in vast pages of notes and always study somewhere quiet, well lit and tidy.
We do hope that you’ve found some of these pointers useful and we’ll be providing some more useful tips in the weeks ahead. In the meantime, happy studying!
