The New Ford Ranger Is Reliable And Practical
The third generation Ford Ranger is a pick-up intended to attract both commercial and private buyers. Its predecessors were praised for being dependable workhorses and for their overall ability and good after sale support. However, its competitors such as the Nissan Navara, have proven to be more polished and practical. Ford revamped it from the ground up in order to revitalise the Ranger brand. It also wanted to improve sales and appeal of the Ranger. Ford is claiming that every single part in the latest model is new. The Ranger certainly shows potential. It is available in lots of configurations; a regular car and double cab with a lots of engine and equipment options.
The competition to be the best pick-up is intense and Ford has tried to stand out but is it enough? Once inside, you feel that you are in a Focus or Fiesta. The layout is similar and the adjustments make it easy for the driver to find a good driving position. It should be noted that some of the plastics are not as high quality as in other Ford vehicles but on the whole, the cabin is sturdy and nicely ...
... designed. Overall the Ranger is comfortable although it could have done with more side support. On the road, wind and tyre noises are astoundingly low and there are multiple storage spaces including a large 8.5 litre centre console bin.
The Ford Ranger is offered in four trim levels: XL, XLT, Limited and Wildtrak. There are also many body styles to choose from, such as Double Cab which has full five seats. Some of the models have a car-like equipment list which include voice control, Bluetooth, a trip computer, rain-sensing wipers, a USB connection and air-con. Dual zone climate control, cruise control and Quickclear heated windscreen come as standard on higher specification models. Buyers can choose from three engines. A 2.2-litre diesel is available with two output options; one with 123bhp and 320Nm and the other one with 148bhp and 375Nm.
Top of the range 3.2litre five cylinder diesel engine has an output of 198bhp and 470Nm of torque. All versions are remarkably capable, and offer significant low-down pull. The Ranger has powerful towing ability which in turn gives a relaxing drive. Most of the versions have a 0-62mph time of less than 13 seconds. All Rangers come mated with an outstanding six-speed manual gearbox. The 2.2 litre variants are offered in two or four wheel drive while all the 3.2 litre models operate on a four wheel drive. The Ranger also rides well and has an agile steering and descent control.
