Darjeeling is a popular tourist hotspot not only because of being located in the lap of the Himalayan mountain range, but also because it is home to one of the best heritage hotels in the world. Constructed in the 1930s, the Windamere hotel is considered to be the pride of Darjeeling. Already awarded with titles like ‘Heritage House of the Himalayas’ and ‘One of the three Jewels of the Raj’, the Windamere was first built as a boarding house for the young Scottish and English tea planters who used to come to Darjeeling. It got transformed into a hotel just before the advent of the Second World War by Mr. Tenduf-La – and since then, it has been echoing the stories of the glory days of the past.

The magnificent history which the Windamere witnessed during its initial days has been carefully preserved over the years. The impact of the British Raj associated with the Windamere can be found on the interior and exterior architectural designs, the furniture items, the ambience and the mannerisms. This is the perfect destination for people who want to experience the bygone days and relive the British era in India.

Being ...
... the only private property on the Observatory Hill, it has an apt location – at the center of the Mall area and also at close proximity with local tourist attractions. The Mall area of Darjeeling is a spectacle to behold. There is nothing as refreshing as an evening walk in the Mall which buzzes with hundreds of shop owners, visitors and the smell of delicious foods. The transportation facilities from the Mall area are also top-notch. When you are staying at the Windamere, the very first thing which will enthrall you is the stupendous view of twenty of the highest mountain peaks in the world from the hotel. The next one which will catch your eye is the beautiful tea gardens. When at Windamere, you need to visit the following places:

•Himalayan Zoological Park – Started in 1958, it is largest high altitude zoo in India. Millions of visitors arrive each year to see the beloved Red panda, Snow leopard, and the Tibetan wolf of the zoo.

•Toy Train Ride – Start from Siliguri and cover 78 kilometers to Darjeeling on the Toy Train. Stay alert when the Batasia Loop approaches – the snow-covered Kanchenjunga awaits!

•Tiger Hill – Book a car the previous day and wake up real early in the morning to reach the Tiger Hill before sunrise. Everyone gets stunned how the first rays of the sun fall on Kanchenjunga and painting it completely orange.

Another reason for visiting the Windamere is the “Christmas Week”. It is held every year from 18th December to 1st January, and is being celebrated in the same way without interrupted since 1939. Entertainers from all over the world come here to perform during the festivities. Christmas at Windamere is so popular that when visitors arrive, they reserve their rooms for the next year.

Therefore, do not delay to book a room at Windamere. It is an experience you should not miss out in life. There are standard rooms, superior rooms, heritage suites, and Tinker Belle’s Cottage to name a few. You also have the option to check in the Ada Villa or the Snuggery. Hotel reservation in India is easy, and you can either reserve in person or book online from their official website. Make sure you spend your next holiday here. You will surely love it!
