Server virtualization refers to the technology that allows the separation or partitioning of one physical server into multiple virtual servers. These virtual servers in turn become independent units and perform just like the original physical one and are able to run its own operating system and applications.

The name server virtualization came up as there is no actual physical partition. It is a process of simulation using the software technology. Each of these virtual servers can run on its own partition on a physical server. They are isolated and so can be transferred between physical servers without any effort.

There are many players offering solution on virtualization and Cisco is the leader in server virtualizations who uses Cisco UCS (Unified Computing System). Cisco has different technologies achieve virtualization at different levels. This solution simplifies server virtualization through comprehensive, end-to-end management, including Applications, Operating system, Physical and virtual servers, Network and storage resources.

CISCO has been one of the front runners in providing the technology necessary ...
... for server virtualization. Let’s now analyze the various advantages of this process.

•Virtualization is based on the theory of partition and when one physical server can be partitioned and you can isolate the virtual servers it naturally reduces the number of physical servers. Along with this reduction there is reduction in other related areas like floor space, power consumption and the air conditioning required for cooling.
•Total cost of ownership or TCO is also reduced
•Virtual servers can be transferred to another physical server without shutting them down
•Increase of scalability
•Affordable strategies for business continuity
CISCO UCS or Unified Computing System is a new age data center platform which has been optimized for virtualization. It integrates network, storage access etc into one cohesive system. Apart from all advantages of server virtualization CISCO offers some additional features like-

•High availability
•Optimized performance
•Consolidation of workload

The CISCO UCS represents a novel way of deploying the traditional blade servers with stateless blades and blade server chassis.

These chassis are centrally provisioned and are managed after proper configuration by the CISCO UCS manager. This innovation simplifies the whole process and significantly reduces the number of components. But this reduction in no way affects its operation and in fact this model allows the system deployment in a very short period of time as opposed to the traditional ones which used to take a very long time.CISCO has also extended the memory which helps in dealing with heavy workloads and this extended memory blade servers increases the performance and capacity which is required for virtualization.

With the computer based work growing everyday companies are now spending a lot of money on hardware. With Cisco Server Virtualization the existing underutilized servers can be used to create virtual servers which in turn will reduce the need for hardware within a particular IT infrastructure.CISCO system provides the latest in virtualization technique whereby the need for hardware has been greatly reduced and with this software you are able to do a lot of work in a more cost effective manner.
