Couples Taking Separate Vacations

While cheap airplane tickets and discount hotel rooms or cheap vacation packages often provide the means to take a vacation, a recent poll found that 59 percent of couples sometimes take separate vacations.

Couples are increasingly going away alone for up to a couple of weeks at a time, according to Iris Krasnow, the author of “The Secret Lives of Wives.” Krasnow interviewed over 200 women regarding their marriages. She observed “You don’t have to be joined at the hip, in order to make your marriage endure.”

Many partners have found that sometimes they need solitude and that separate getaways allow them to return refreshed. Spending time on your own can result in long term benefits.

Currently divorce rates are running 43, percent down from the 50 percent it has been for decades. Experts attribute this decline in part to people marrying later and smarter. Krasnow observed “People are learning that it’s OK to rewrite the rules of marriage for their own needs, and not just do what their grandparents did. It’s a gift my husband gives me to be able to fly solo once in a while.”

... spouses are still likely to react negatively to the idea of separate vacations. The following are things that should be considered prior to taking separate vacations:

• Trust is mandatory for a separate vacation to be considered. Otherwise spending time apart could easily contribute to suspicions about what spouses are really up to while on their own.

• Separate vacations can end up much more costly when individuals stay in different hotels vs. piling the whole family into the same hotel room. Minimize travel costs by searching for special discounts or getting bulk deals by traveling with friends.

• Make certain you are comfortable enough as a couple to withstand the criticism that often follows from family and friends when they hear that you are taking separate vacations.
