Books are, as we all know, a total must have for any students who wish to be taken seriously. In the end, heading off to school can be pretty daunting - especially when you find yourself in a seminar with lots of well-read students busily fist-pumping the air answering questions - however it doesn’t need to be. #1 - Catch 22
This historical and satirical WW1 book is a bit like Marmite - you’ll possibly love it or you’ll dislike it. Told in a non linear fashion, Joseph Heller’s much lauded novel is an absolute must-read for all students trying to obtain the lead in every logical conversation. Plenty to debate, plenty to quote and lots to feel smug about when anyone discover you’ve check the book cover-to-cover.
#2 - The Communist Manifesto
Fancy being the kind of student everybody identifies as “the deep one”? You know it. The best thing about this book is that it’s brief, however, being as it had been written by Karl Marx ...
... and Friedrich Engels, it remains to be one of the world’s most influential political manifestos of all time. Logical, endlessly quotable and always debatable, this is the kind of book that everyone should read at least once.
#3 - 1984
George Orwell’s frightening dystopian realm is definitely worth a read, specially as so much of his forecasts seem to be coming true. From the Big Brother state (hello CCTV!) towards the telescreens, this is an old time book that never feels outdated, no matter what year you read it in.
#4 - Harry Potter
You intend to read a book that everybody knows, simply to provide you something to speak about when the going gets tough. Stay away from Twilight (it has a poor reputation!) and adhere to JK Rowling’s tale of student wizard Harry Potter. Follow The Boy Who Lived in his adventure through school, up to adulthood, and attempt to follow his good example - particularly, be kind, be brave, be the one to kill the most evil threat to wizardmanity ever.
#5 - The Bell Jar
Sylvia Plath’s woeful story will not seem like an obvious one but, for anyone feeling disillusioned with life, it’s a definite must read. Bittersweet, poignant and overwhelmingly beautiful, it shows the story of a woman on the brink of womanhood definitely perfectly. The sort of book that anybody should read but most likely won’t.
