Webcam Software
A Web Camera is a digital photo or video camera, which gives an opportunity to fix an image in the real life for further sending over the internet (by using programs like skype, instant messenger, etc). Web cameras that transfer data over the internet upload images to a web-server by demand, continuously or through certain periods of time. These features are achieved by connecting the camera to computer or by web-camera itself. Some latest models have webcam software and hardware that allows the camera to work as a web-server, an FTP-server, FTP-client and/or send images via e-mail.
How was webcam created?
It all began in one of Cambridge labs at the dawn of 90s, when internet was just presented to the public. It was designed by just 15-20 people that worked on a project in network technologies and the conditions they worked in were rough. The main research was in the labs and the personnel were living in the same building with only one coffee-maker. So, in those conditions an unorthodox decision was required. One of the computers had a frame grabber. A camera was attached to it and it was aimed at a research object. ...
... This computer was acting as a web-server due to its software. So people that wanted to know if there is still some coffee had to launch certain software, which connected with the server. As a result, a black and white image appeared on the screen of the remote computer and it had a refresh rate of three times per minute. A note was made about such curious fact and then published in the Comm-Week magazine on January 27, 1992. Little time passed since the appearance of the first prototypes of ip-cameras but they constantly transform and now step out as appliances that can make our life simpler, more comfortable.
Nowadays, webcams are integrated in almost every model of notebooks, netbooks and phones but their image quality is still about 1.3 mp (which is still great for Skype and similar programs). One can always buy a more powerful web-cam and then attach it through USB port, but the image quality (when talking on Skype, for example) will depend on your internet speed.
