Unbelievable yet true, the locksmithing industry is unregulated in any way by the Government. This means that anybody can work as a locksmith regardless of their skills, experience or motive.

Training
A Training Centre at the Master Locksmiths Association Head Office, a not for profit trade association representing and approving Locksmiths in the United Kingdom, was established to enable the organization of a basic training program in 1992. This has proved quite successful and is now well renowned throughout the locksmithing industry as the only formal mode for locksmith certification.

These courses provide a focal point for beginners or newcomers to the industry and existing locksmiths who want to update their skill sets or gain new knowledge. At your request, specialist training may also be arranged.

Third Party Accreditation

Having a long history of providing locksmith certification, to either those who are just starting off in the trade or those who want to further their knowledge in special technical areas, the MLA has ...
... been given the prestigious City & Guilds “Approved Centre” status, enabling the association to offer a specialized City & Guilds award in Basic Locksmithing which is particularly based on its entry exam.

The association is also accredited by the Career Transition Partnership, for those looking to undergo re-settlement training when leaving the armed forces.

A Professional Locksmith

Several skills are required to become a professional locksmith. Perfect manual dexterity, an enthusiasm in mechanical and electronic gadgetry, pleasant communications and public relations, acceptable math skills and possibly some carpentry skills are all valuable if you want to work as a locksmith. SW7 locksmiths also find speedy non destructive entry and exceptional lock casting as assets.

Nonetheless, note that locksmithing is a career that will keep your interest running since there is a constant need for Continued Professional Development. This is partly because of the continuous development of new products that require new perception and techniques on the part of the locksmith. The locksmith craft is very diverse, with many specialist fields. In some cases, locksmiths will have a business that covers some of these fields while some specialize in a single area.

Your local locksmith may usually be able to offer you work as ‘apprentice’ even though there are currently no formal apprenticeships in locksmithing. Due to this, the MLA is working alongside the industry’s skill body, Skills for Security, to monitor for any complaints. Another way to gain a locksmith certification is to attend a British Locksmiths Institute (BLI) General Locksmithing Course at MLA’s training centre. The dates of the current courses can be found in the course calendar page of the MLA’s website and early booking is recommended, as courses usually prove very popular. You will be requested to complete an application for membership to the BLI which enables references to be taken up and a background check to be undertaken prior to course commencement.

All courses are strictly limited to a few places and bookings. Together with appropriate fees dealt with, you’re on your way to become a professional locksmith. Stoke Newington currently has no training courses lined up.
