Know Your Android Os Versions: Cupcake To Jelly Bean

The history of the Android OS can be traced back to November 2007, when the initial commercial version of the operating system was released to be used in mobile devices. Over the past five years, Android has developed into one of the most popular & best selling operating systems, and has also seen a large number of updates from its original released version. Since the year 2009, all subsequent versions of the Android OS were released under names in alphabetical order; and thus the world saw the introduction of Android versions like:
1. Cupcake – This version of the world’s most popular operating system appeared in the mobile market in the year 2009. On 30 April that year, the updated Android 1.5 version was released, becoming the first in a line of subsequent Android versions which would be named keeping in mind the codename of a dessert. Cupcake was based on the operating system of Linux kernel 2.6.27 and came armed with a variety of new features that quickly drew the attention of mobile device users. 2. Donut – On September 15 2009, Android released the second version of its operating systems to be named after a dessert. Dubbed Donut, this Android 1.6 SDK version running on Linux kernel 2.6.29 again saw the introduction of new technological features like text to speech engine and support for CDMA smartphones.

3. Éclair – Released in October 2009, Éclair was the codename used for the Android 2.0 version. This version of the OS introduced features like a new browser interface, soft keys support, Microsoft exchange support, and enhanced camera app.

4. Froyo – Released in August 2010, this is the shortened codename for Android 2.2 version, earlier known as Frozen Yogurt. This OS version came with features like Flash 10.1 support, USB tethering, and voice dialing over Bluetooth.

5. Gingerbread – Debuting in December 2010, this is the codename used for the Android 2.3 version. Gingerbread introduced better gaming functionality for smartphones and Google Voive over Wi-Fi.

6. Honeycomb – Introduced in February 2011, Honeycomb is the codename for Android 3.0. This is essentially a tablet centric operating system which was released to provide facilities such as video chat support, System Bar, Action Bar, and new email interface for devices with large screens.

7. Ice Cream Sandwich – Released in the mobile market in October 2011, Ice Cream Sandwich is the codename for Android 4.0 version. Post release, this operating system was dubbed as “Google’s everywhere OS” since it could run effectively in all types of devices ranging from smartphones, tablets, PDAs, and other forms of mobile devices.

8. Jelly Bean – This is the tentative codename to be used for the yet to be released 5.0 version of the Android operating system. Reports have suggested the later months of 2012 as the possible release time for the Jelly Bean OS. While the enhancements to be introduced as part of Jelly Bean has still not been confirmed by Android authorities, technology analysts have projected natural language voice command ability as one of the most important new features that will be part of Jelly Bean. With Jelly Bean, a user will also have access to Google Chrome’s mobile version.

With the last updated version of the Android OS yet to be released, mobile device users across the world are waiting in anticipation to look through the latest features provided by their favorite OS platform.
