Often when we get any kind of furniture constructed or decide to purchase one from the market, we focus on the body of the furniture and ignore the legs. If we are honest, nine out of ten times we hardly pay any attention to the furniture legs and are more concerned on how good or bad the overall furniture fittings. Another popular style of furniture leg is called Marlborough and this design came into being somewhere in the middle of 18th century. This type of furniture leg tends to be straight and square and contain a block foot. Fluting, which is a design where a row of vertical grooves are made on the leg is used to further enhance the decorative aspect. The Greeks introduced fluting on columns, which were a contrast to Roman columns that were left smooth.
The Greeks introduced saber legs, where the leg tends to curve outwardly as it reaches the floor. This particular style of furniture legs was introduced in 5th B.C. and it was popular with not only the Greeks but also with the Romans. The curve undoubtedly enhanced the elegance of the furniture leg and also lent a certain line flow that was missing earlier. In 19th century, Thomas Sheraton featured this style of leg in most of this furniture design books and therefore most Sheraton style of furniture use this type of furniture legs.
Neat and clean design with simple lines is the hallmark of square and tapered furniture legs. This type of style is simpler and less complicated than Queen Anne design even though they emerged during the same time period. The legs tend to narrow down to the foot. This type of furniture leg is any day much more modern in style and look and therefore it compliments the modern décor of any house.
