When you're looking for a bargain the gift of the gab is a hugely useful weapon to have in your armoury. Embarking into a conversation with a used car salesman is probably not everyone's idea of fun, but it can be. With years of experience in sales talk they are liable to take the upper hand and reduce your confidence before you've even got into your stride. If you're a bit wary of pushing for a bargain when buying as used car, here are some ways you can talk your way to some money off:

Be prepared

Always have a figure in your mind of what you want to pay for the car before you embark on any haggling or even talk about money. Base your purchase figure on your research into the price range of your desired car.

Don't feel intimidated

Car sellers, especially used car dealers, are very astute at squeezing a few more quid out of your wallet than you were looking to spend. Remember they are only human and it is your hard earned cash; you can walk away whenever you want.

Building rapport

People, even salesman, will always be more amiable and likely to do you a deal if the conversation is ...
... more jovial. Get on first name terms as quickly as possible and namedrop at every opportunity to build the rapport. Don't get too involved though as you are there to do a deal, not make friends.

Never take the first price

Even if the first price is below your budget - keep pushing. Salesman will never offer you the best price upfront; they are there to get the best possible deal for their employer and remember the more they weasel out of you, the more commission they make.

Extras on offer

If negotiations have gone reasonably well, but have now hit a stalemate then try another tack. Once a rock-bottom price is hit attempt to get some extras chucked in to sweeten the deal.

Getting out

If you are getting nowhere and the price is still too high for you, but the dealer has you in their sights always have an excuse lined up to get you out of there. Say you have to visit someone in hospital, have a dentist appointment, or whatever you like, as long as it something they cannot argue with. You should have one of these for every situation anyway.

Whether for your next car you have chosen is a used Vauxhall Corsa, a used Vauxhall Vectra, or a different model entirely, ensure to haggle and get the best deal you can. Visit http://used.cars.networkq.co.uk for more information.
