Languages To Expect In Spain
Spain is a land of diversity. There are many places to visits while in Spain. The languages are also so many in Spain that you will be dazed. The main language is Spanish but there is a lot of debate trying to find out what the official language is in Spain.
The major languages in Spain include Catalan, Galician, and Basque. All of these are specific to certain areas in Spain and you are therefore bound to find different languages in different areas of Spain. The most unique language is Basque and classifying the language is quite hard as it is hard to even know its origin.
Another language is Asturiano. It is widely spoken in Asturias and is recognized as semi official. Rural areas such as Salamanca, Zamora and Leon also speak the language. It is also spoken in some villages in Portugal. The language is not explicitly recognized by the constitution of Spain but it is actually not protected although the Asturians try very hard to protect it. They have actually objected in front of the Supreme Court.
Aragonese is also quite a popular language spoken in Aragon. It is not really popular and is definitely not ...
... official. The language closely relates to Catalan and Castilian and also has some influences from Occitan, Basque and Castilian. Very few villages use the language in the Pyrenees. Other people actually mix the language with Castilian during the daily speech.

Aranese is well spoken in Aran valley. It is not an official language. It is a mix of Gascon Occitan and is related to Catalan, Languedoc, Limousin and Provencal. As you can see, all these languages are spoken in specific areas. If your tour is location specific, try learning even the basics. You will never be disappointed.
In the schools of Spain, languages such as French and English are taught. Many Spaniards, especially the younger ones have already been taught English but lack the exposure that is required so they have poor proficiency. Many people actually are not conversant in English so it would be advisable to stick to only a few words at a time. If you get lost while in Spain and need to find help, the only people that may be able to help you are actually the younger urban people. Avoid long sentences and try keeping all your words as simple as possible.
Some airlines and major airlines may have staff members who can understand English. Some areas like Costa del Sol and Barcelona also have English speakers who are quite fluent.
