An alternative weekly newspaper is a good thing to have in a big city. I used to live in Houston and my favorite newspaper was not the Houston Post when it existed or the Houston Chronicle after that. I loved the Houston Press. I would be excited every Thursday that a new newspaper would be on the newsstand.

The Houston Press is a great newspaper. I found fun things to do and many places to eat in this newspaper. I would have never gone to see The Emperor and the Assassin at the movie theater if I hadn't read a review in the Houston Press newspaper.

The first time I ate at the Chicken and Egg Roll on North Shepherd was because of the restaurant review in the Houston Press newspaper. It was delicious and I am so glad that I tried it. It was interesting to me because the cook works with a wok right in front of the customers and the food is delicious.

When I moved to North Texas, I really missed the Houston Press newspaper. I don't like their online version as much as their print version. Also, there are a lot less topics that pertain to me because I currently live six hours from Houston.

...
... here is a newspaper in Dallas that I pick up every time I'm there. They have the Dallas Observer newspaper which looks disturbingly similar to the Houston Press. I did a little poking around on the internet and discovered that the same company that puts out the Houston Press newspaper and the Dallas Observer newspaper also put out a whole bunch of other alternative weekly newspapers.

Village Voice Media is a privately held corporation that owns the Village Voice, the nation's oldest and largest alternative weekly newspaper. They also own the the Dallas Observer and the Houston Press, among others. The layout of the alternative weekly newspaper published by Village Voice Media is a pretty standardized format now. It seems as though they input local info and just turn a crank to produce their newspaper.

Online News At MyYahoo

I get my online news from Yahoo. I like the customized MyYahoo page that I've created with my Yahoo registration. I like to have the headlines that actually interest me on my page.

The online news that I choose to have on my page includes reports from various sources. The online news content that is first on my page is the headlines from Common Dreams.

I get more online news from the headlines from MyAntiWar.org. The articles and online news from this website are extremely liberal, just like I like.

I used to have satellite television in my home, but I realized that it was only being used as a time-waster for my children and the only thing I watched religiously was Democracy Now! Now, I read online news from Democracy Now instead of watch.

Online news from the Middle East is provided by Mosaic on my MyYahoo page. The viewpoint from this source of online news is very different than the online news from mainstream American media.

Beyond my need for important world online news and liberal viewpoints, I use online news as a source of entertainment. I subscribe to Reuters' Oddly Enough online news.

I also subscribe to Strange News online news from the Associated Press and Odd News from the Canadian Press. The online news that I get from these sources is only for amusement.

Some of the most entertaining online news is from the AFP and is called Offbeat News. I can usually find some amusement from at least one of the online news articles published in their content.

I'm interested in a subscription for online news on my MyYahoo page that lists the most viewed online news stories. I rarely read these articles, I just read the headlines.

The same procedure goes for the subscription to the most emailed online news stories that I have on my MyYahoo page. I just read the headlines to get a feel for what Americans are thinking about. I usually can't bring myself to read any of the online news stories in this section.

The reason I find it hard to read the online news stories that most Americans are reading is because I have just read online news that is important. I have determined that the online news that Americans are interested in is stupid.

USA Today has online news that is just as insipid as their printed news. It is offensive to me that news for an entire nation can be boiled down to some abomination of real news. The stories are condescending and short, just like American attention spans.
