The state of Maharashtra is darned with hills, scenic coastal plains, rivers and magnificent forts. Maharashtra is the land of Shivaji who was the founder of the Maratha Empire. The state of Maharashtra spreads over an area of 307,690 sq km, and it is surrounded by other prosperous and big states like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and the union territory of Dadar and Nagar Haveli.

Maharashtra is the third largest state in India, and it is situated in the western part of the country. Maharashtra means “Great Nation”; this state stands up to its very meaning because it is a booming and highly industrialized state of India. Maharashtra has all the ingredients that make a state a successful. It is well known for its rich history, geography and culture.

Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra and also the biggest city of India. Mumbai is the second largest producer of films in the world and the cosmopolitan lifestyle makes it a perfect city. Maharashtra is also home to one of the largest industrial centers in India, which is Pune. Pune is a very important city in this state and it is not just an industrial hub but known for educational institutions and research centers.
Maharashtra is a state which has traces of both native traditions and western education. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world and this is said because it is home to one of the most famous tourist places like Lonavala, Khandala, Matheran, Panchgani, and Mahabaleshwar. The UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Ajanta and Ellora and Elephanta Caves are also in Maharashtra. Nagpur is yet another important city of Maharashtra which is famous for its high-quality oranges.
Local Culture
The majority of Marathi people in Maharashtra are Hindus and Ganesh is the most popular god amongst Marathi Hindus, besides Lord Krishna in the form of Vithal. The local Hindus of Maharashtra give immense importance to the Warkari tradition. Ganesh festival was started by Loakmanya Tilak in the late 19th century, and it is the most important festival for the people of Maharashtra. Marathi is the local language of this state.
Getting There
Maharashtra is well connected by rail, road and air. In fact it is the second leading state with maximum number of airports in India.
