Kolkata's History
According to the archaeological evidences at Chandraketugarh, Kolkata had been inhabited for over 2000 years. However, Kolkata's history is known from 1690 when the East India Company was establishing its trade business in India. The three villages named Sutanati, Govindpur, and Kalikata were incorporated by Job Charnok, the administrator of the Company. Kolkata's history reveals that this city was a key point of politics and the famous wars during the 18th century. Kolkata, after the historical battle of Plassey, witnessed the first Movement of Independence. The great movement of 1857 was actually started at Barrackpore, one of the military cantonments of Kolkata. Kolkata is also the native place of Indian National Congress. Post independence, a mass of Muslims left Kolkata for East Pakistan and a vast Hindu mob flee from Dhaka seeking refuge in Kolkata as a result of partition. This brought a massive change in infrastructure and the demography of Kolkata. Kolkata faced several ups and downs afterwards, but is successfully standing as an important pillar of the nation.
Being a historical city, Kolkata is home to numerous palaces, monuments and temples bearing architectural significance. The Victoria Memorials, Indian Museum, St Paul’s Cathedral, Marble Palace, National Library of India, Writers' building, Shaheed Minar and Raj Bhavan are some of the famous Kolkata tourist attractions.
