Survive Holiday Travel
Cheap travel options, including cheap airplane tickets, discount hotel rooms and cheap vacation packages often provide the means of traveling over the holidays. However, additional steps need to be taken if you do not want such travel to be something only the hardy can endure.
Holiday travel usually means facing crowded airports, long lines, delayed flights, and sometimes upset travelers.
Frommer’s offers the following tips on how to take the sting out of travelling home for the holidays:
• Arrive at the airport earlier than you think is necessary so that you have plenty of time to deal with any unexpected delays. The plus side of arriving really early is that sometimes gate agents are willing to place passengers on earlier flights.
• Purchase a day pass at an airport lounge. If there is a delay or cancellation, chances are you will receive better customer service in the lounge. Free snacks and drinks can be enjoyed in these lounges.
• Pay for extra legroom if you will be taking a long distance flight. Often airlines extend priority check in and early boarding to passengers who ...
... pay for extra space.
• Avoid checking a bag. If you can’t fit everything into your carry-on, look into sending your bags four to five days in advance via FedEx Ground or UPS. This is often cheaper than paying checked bag fees and you don’t have to stand in line to check your bag, wait on your bag at the carousel, lug it around, or fight for overhead space. FedEx has much better tracking than airlines and will insure your valuables which the airlines will not.
• Look into redeeming your frequent flier miles for a seat upgrade. 15,000 miles on United upgrades passengers from $300 coach seats to $1,500 or more Business or First Class seats.
• Be pleasant to airline staff even if they do not deserve it. Smiling, offering compliments, and generally being nice are the best ways to endure unpleasant situations.
• Bring/buy noise canceling headphones to drown out unwanted noise.
• Neck pillows can make sleep much more comfortable, especially if you are stuck in a middle seat.
• Load up your electronic devices with plenty of in flight entertainment.
• Eat something before boarding. Do not count on the airline to feed you. Pack a few things, such as fruit and granola bars, in your carry-on and remember to stay well hydrated.
