Most travelers are on the lookout for cheap travel deals, be they cheap airplane tickets, discount hotel rooms, cheap auto rentals, or cheap vacation packages. The toughest challenge often is identifying the top value destinations where visitors can get the most out of their travel dollars.

The following recommendations by Lonely Planet are not necessarily the cheapest destinations to visit. Instead these are spots for travelers who want to go somewhere new and interesting without breaking the bank:

• Rio de Janeiro Brazil has fabulous beaches and iconic landmarks. This is a city gearing up to welcome the world and will be host to the football World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016.

• Gothenburg, Sweden is home to neighborhoods filled with character, inexpensive eats, and some impressive attractions, including the edgy art space Roda Sten and picnic friendly city views in Keillers Park. Ferries trundle around the beautiful, car free southern archipelago. Visitors are just a tram ride from the city centre.

... attractions including the Etosha National Park and the Skeleton Coast. Namibia attracts tourists looking for outstanding deals. Namibia offers some of the best value outdoor pursuits in Southern Africa such as sandboarding around Swakopmund and hiking in Fish River Canyon.

• Cambodia remains a great deal offering a large amount of budget accommodations. By exploring less well visited parts tourists can live on a budget of $15 a day so long as they forgo a room with air conditioning.

• Bolivia is South America’s best value destination. It offers cheap public transportation, satisfying street food and high value excursions. While things are a little costlier in La Paz and must see Uyuni, away from these cities set menu meals will rarely go over $5 with budget rooms not much over $10 per night.

• Portland Oregon is often recognized as America’s favorite affordable city to visit, offering cheap food, free activities, and forty breweries that sell pints of perfectly crafted beer often for $4.

• Spain is becoming increasingly affordable because of currency fluctuations and falling prices. The wonders of Spain’s cities, wilder north coast, and impressive national parks are even cheaper than a couple of years ago.

• Slovenia reminds many of Switzerland but is smaller and much less expensive. While Ljubljana, Bled and coastal areas in the summer can be a bit pricy, small distances keep travel expenses cheap. Many inexpensive buses radiate out of Ljubljana. Skiing, rafting and the scenery of one of Europe’s most beautiful countries make every visit worthwhile.

• Nepal is a fabulous destination for budget travelers. If spending as little as possible is your priority, then you will need to say outside of Kathmandu and stick to simple local food. Costs rise as you enter national parks, but if you are trekking on your own and staying in teahouses, Nepal is the best value destination for Himalayan hiking.

• Georgia is a beautiful, friendly country that offers excellent, inexpensive cuisine typified by its cheese pie. Travel by bus, train, or marshrustka minibus ride will provide jaw dropping views worth far more than the cheap price of your ride.
