Pain management jobs are a sub-specialty in medicine that is linked closely to anesthesiology. In many cases, physicians who seek pain management jobs complete their training in the anesthesiology field. As a result, they may practice medicine in places such as an outpatient clinics or doctor's office instead of a surgical setting. However, some physicians in this field will have backgrounds in other fields, such as general care practices. No matter the background of a physician, finding positions in this field requires knowing the demands of the job and what it has to offer the proper applicant.

Pain management jobs for physicians will typically have them working out of an office setting, where they will service approximately 25 patients on a daily basis. These jobs are typically offered through a larger hospital or medical system; however allow the physician to have their own office for care. In this position, the physician will be responsible for managing debilitating and chronic pain, which is caused by various sources. Some examples of these sources are certain diseases or injuries that a patient has sustained.

This can include preforming tests, including range of motion in the afflicted area, as well as the overall mobility of the patient. Once the pain assessment has been completed the physician will determine the appropriate method of treatment. This can include treatment plans such as:

-Chiropractic care
-Epidurals
-Massage or acupuncture
-Targeted physical therapy

In some cases they will recommend or refer the patient to a doctor in the specialty they prescribe, such as chiropractic care. Additionally, if they determine that the pain is being caused by an underlying factor due to disease or chronic condition they may also pass the case on to a more qualified physician in that particular area of expertise.
The pain management specialty offers a rewarding career choice due to the fact that practitioners can improve a patient's quality of life. Additionally, if the doctor has a background in anesthesiology, they can utilize their skills in an office setting, opposed to operating rooms. They also do not have to worry about being called in the middle of the night, because they will have specific office hours.

As a specialist in pain management the doctor will also be faced with certain challenges. There are many patients who seek these pain medications for recreational and even illegal purposes. As a result, many doctors have had to incorporate extremely strenuous screening methods to ensure a patient’s claims are legitimate. As a professional in the field of pain management, a doctor can have a very rewarding career with the freedom to work from an office setting and greatly improve their patients’ lives.
