The use of consumer mail lists is not exactly new, although it is only now that this tool is getting the attention it deserves. In fact, email marketing is considered as the most effective marketing tactic online next to search marketing and one of the most efficient and practical marketing strategy in general. But despite this distinction, many still do not understand the concept, the inner working, and the benefits of using consumer mail lists. Because of this, a number of misconceptions about consumer email lists abound. A number of these misconceptions have grounds, but all of them are fallacious. In order not to be deceived, it is best to know the truth about consumer email lists.

Many skeptics say that consumer mailing lists are not as effective as direct mailing because very few people will get to see the marketing material sent through email, more so read it. On the other hand, tangible mailers are more accessible, they say. However, this is not entirely true. More than half of those with email account check their online mail at least once a day. Companies and brands use other Internet features such as social network sites, blogs, and discussion forums to promote their business. Understandably, they use tools such as the consumer email list to cope with the times.

Also, there is no truth to the rumor that email marketing through the use of a consumer email list is illegal. Spending spam email is frowned upon; legitimate email marketing is not. Spam email is characterized by the involvement of unsolicited identical or similar messages. When one gets a consumer list from legitimate and reliable list providers, businesses and companies can be sure that they are complying with the CAN-SPAM Act which allows them to send promotional materials.
