Musical Dental Drill Helps Calm Patient Fears

Dental treatments are becoming ever more advanced and these days, when individuals are in need of emergency dentists in Manchester and elsewhere, they can benefit from impressive results.

One man who is pushing the boundaries further still is dental surgeon Dr Dhanni Gustiana. The 37-year-old lives and works in Java, Indonesia and has created a new tool that he hopes is helping his patients to relax when they are having treatments.

He has made a musical drill that emits tunes rather than the usual high-pitch whine.

Dr Gustiana has even attached colourful flashing lights to the tool to further ease patients’ concerns. He is particularly keen to lessen the anxieties of his younger patients, who he discovered are particularly fearful of the drill.

The medical expert remarked: “The children are not afraid of [the] doctor, many of them are afraid of drill. I modified this by putting a toy on the head of the drill and tell them that the toy will clean their teeth.”

After a year of research, he went on to create the musical version, which uses the sounds from an MP3 player.

... he stated: “The patient will hear the music louder when they open their mouths compared to when they close their mouths.”

So that his patients get the most from the musical experiences, they are able to request songs to be loaded onto the MP3 player. Meanwhile, Dr Gustiana spent around £372 modifying the instrument and he presented his creation at the International Dental Congress in March this year.

At present, he treats around 15 patients per day and around half of these are children. However, adults are also asking him for the musical drill, he revealed.
