Delhi is the nation’s capital officially known as the National Capital territory of Delhi, it is the largest metropolis in the country by area and the second largest in terms of population.

Where is Delhi

Delhi is part of the Gangetic River Basin in Northern India. It lies on the banks of the Yamuna River. Delhi is bordered by Uttar Pradesh to the east and on the other three sides by the state of Haryana. Located almost entirely within the Gangetic plains, the topography of Delhi is mainly flatland plains, with the only variations being the flood plains of River Yamuna and the Delhi Ridge formed by an extension of the ancient Aravalli Hills.

Delhi Culture

Being the National Capital Region and an International City, Delhi is a melting pot of cultures. Though dominantly Hindu, Delhi has a huge Muslim population, having served as the Capital of the Delhi sultanate and also as the capital of the Later Mughal Emperors. Other religious denominations include Sikhs, Christians, Jains and Parsis.

Delhi is believed to be one of the oldest cities in the world with records referring to it going back more than 5000 years. Old Delhi is believed to be the legendary Indraprastha, the capital of the Pandavas of Mahabharata.

Hindi is the main language spoken by the people, followed by Punjabi and Urdu. English and Hindi are used for official communications.

The Red Fort

The Red Fort or Lal Qila is a huge fort built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. It houses the halls of Public and Private Audience, a closed bazaar, a garden, and many palaces.

Humayun’s tomb

Humayun’s Tomb, a memorial to the second Mughal Emperor is located in South Delhi. This is a World Heritage Site. This structure bears a striking resemblance to Taj Mahal and is believed to have been the Inspiration for the more famous monument.

Qutub Complex

Located in Mehrauli, the huge complex is another UNESCO World Heritage Site in Delhi. This complex contains the Qutub Minar a soaring, finely carved minaret. The ancient Iron Pillar of Mehrauli also lies within this complex. This 7 meter high pillar was constructed by Chandragupta II Vikramaditya. This pillar still stands strong after 1600 years, showing no signs of rust or corrosion, a testament to the skills of Ancient Indian craftsmen.

Jantar mantar
The Jantar Mantar in Delhi is one of a set of five observatories built by Sawai Mansingh of Jaipur.
Raj Ghat
This is the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi.
Purana Qila
Literally, Purana Qila means Old Fort. It is the site of the ruins of an old city and is believed to be located on the site of the ancient Indraprastha of Mahabharata.

How to Reach Delhi

Delhi is an international destination, being the capital of the Nation. The Indira Gandhi International Airport connects Delhi to major cities around the world. The Palam Domestic Airport connects Delhi to various regions within the country.

Delhi is connected to all the major regions of the country through India’s huge railway network. Delhi has three major Railway Stations – Old Delhi, New Delhi and Nizamuddin.

Delhi is well connected on bus routes to major cities of the country, by buses starting from the many Interstate Bus Terminals.
