The state of Assam which was established on the day of Independence (15 August 1947) is located in the north east region of India. Together with other bordering states lining it, Assam forms a part of the Seven Sister States.

The state of Assam along with the other sister states is connected with the rest of the country via a small narrow stretch of land in West Bengal often called as Siliguri Corridor or “Chicken’s Neck”. Owing to temperate climate, the state of Assam is blessed withbountiful rainfall thereby promoting the growth of a health green forest cover over the entire state.
Local Culture
The culture of Assam is derived from a variety of cultures owing to the fact that it maintains close ties with South East Asia and identifies with a host of traditions and culture from the countries present there and due to its impending British History and influence. The Assamese culture is considered to be rich and co-exists with several sub-systems and sub-cultures present in the state like Bodo or Karbi or Mishing. All major religious groups are present in the sent thereby creating an eclectic blend of diverse cultures and traditions. However some of the common and unique cultural traits in the region include a deep respect for the areca-nut and betel leaves. The Assamese also have a sincere respect towards traditional silk garments and towards their forefathers and the elderly.

Due to a vast green cover coupled with a pleasant climate, the state of Assam makes for a beautiful tourist destination.The state has a huge presence of wildlife sanctuaries and national parks which showcase a wide variety of flora and fauna. Amongst them the Kaziranga National Park and the Manas National Park are some of the most popular with tourists. The traditional festival of Bihu and Durga Puja are some of the most common and widely celebrated festivals that also acts as a major draw for tourists to make a beeline to the state.
Getting to Assam
The best time to visit Assam would be between Octobers to April as during this time the climate is the best and tourists can enjoy to the maximum.
The state of Assam is accessible by air, road and rail. The main city of Guwahati acts as a connecting point to the rest of India and limited international destinations. There are also several trains that connect all the main cities in India with Assam. Guwahati, considered the largest city in the North- Eastern part of the country, acts as the major connecting point for a well-established road network with the seven sister states.
