Specialty drilling tools allow locksmiths to drill holes in tough spots. But not all tools work with all types of surfaces.
Locksmiths are trained professionals who pick, install, repair and bypass all kinds of locks with the use of an array of Locksmith Tools and Supplies. When a locksmith needs to drill holes to fit new locks, he utilizes specialty tools to bore surfaces, such as metal and wooden doors. However, not all tools work with all types of surfaces. Some drilling tools are designed just for a single purpose. Know some of the types of Specialty Locksmith Tools and Supplies for Drilling Holes:

Relocating Cross Bore

Bores are holes cut into doors for installing locksets. These tools are used to connect one item to other lock fittings in a door. Drill guides for relocating cross bores improve the precision of hole placement and are also utilized to correct holes drilled inaccurately. A relocating cross bore is screwed onto the latch side of a mortise faceplate so an electric saw can out the proper shape. Some models out in the market come with a drill blank ...
... that helps reduce the wear on the guide with a sharper hole-saw bit.

Mortiser

Mortise locks are easier to install than lower quality models, since the lock sits in a small cavity inside the door. Only the faceplate and some trims of the mortise lock can be seen from the outside. To install a mortise lock into a door, a hole is cut using a mortiser to make an assortment of drilled cuts, jointly with an electric drill. Mortiser models feature modifiable settings for creating chambers for mortise locks of various sizes. Some current models also have a self adjusting tool attached that make drilling the correct size hole much easier and in the right location on doors.

Drill Bits

Drill bits tailor made for specific tasks are commonly used by locksmiths for cutting precise holes in doors to create the correct aperture size for the insertion of items like pre-made locksets. Pre-assembled locksets are easier to install since they come in one unit and only require fitting into the door. Drill bits closely look like cookie cutters, but have sharp, toothed edges for a cleaner cut. Since locksets come in different sizes, each lock will require a corresponding drill bit size. The 7/8 inch and 1 inch varieties are some of the most popular drill bit measurements used by a locksmith. Barnet drill bits may have multi-spur or brad point edges. Bits used for wooden doors are made from toughened metal and are different from bits used for drilling holes in other surface types, such as metal. Drill bits used in drilling holes on metal doors or inserting screws to an anti-drill plate are made from hardened steel with a carbide tip which are commonly used by a professional locksmith. Wembley-made anti-drill plates are tough steel plates fitted to secure areas of a lock where a potential thief would use a drill to break the lock and gain entry to the property.
