Although mobile phones started being used in the 1980s, it’s only in the last ten years that they have become popular and now they allow us to do so many things (such as take pictures, receive calls and texts, go on the internet, listen to music and play games) that it hardly seems worth carrying anything other than the mobile and our wallets. While this has been fantastic for us, it hasn’t worked out so well for the home phone, as landlines are becoming less important and a lot of people are either disconnecting their landline or barely using it and paying for the privilege.

It might seem like there is no need to keep a landline any longer - why bother when we can do everything through our mobiles? Well, the network can be a problem. You don’t always get fantastic signal wherever you are and the same goes for whoever’s calling you if they’re also on their mobile. This doesn’t happen with a landline, and it’s a good thing as well - imagine if there was an emergency that happened at home but you couldn’t find any signal to call for help. If you didn’t have a landline, what would happen then? It’s clear ...
... that there is still a place for a home phone line in our lives, no matter how often or little you use it.

Fortunately, you can get a phone line installed and connected for a very affordable fee – long gone are the days when only the rich and famous could afford to install a landline. Almost every major broadband provider also provides a landline service to customers, with a common catch being that landlines can often now only be purchased in conjunction with the company’s broadband. However, there are certain providers, usually the bigger ones like BT and Virgin, who do offer a landline on its own if that’s what the customer wants. BT, in particular, was one of the first of the country’s home phone providers and still offers one of the wider ranges of landline options available. It has four landline-only deals which are aimed at those who use the landline in varying amounts: the Unlimited Weekend Calls deal, the Unlimited Weekend and Evening Calls deal, the Unlimited Anytime Calls deal and the Unlimited Anytime Plan Plus deal. All of the deals run for twelve months and are fairly self-explanatory in what they offer – they are all available for a flat line rental fee with calls at the times specified in their names thrown in free. The difference between the Unlimited Anytime and Unlimited Anytime Plan Plus deals is simply that the latter includes cheaper calls to UK mobiles as well as unlimited calls to landlines at any time.

There is still a place in our lives for a landline and it’s probably the easiest and cheapest it’s ever been to get one - unlike searching for broadband and TV deals, it shouldn’t take long to find a landline deal you’re happy with.
