PHYSICS

In Greek, The word Physics means "nature". Thus, Physics is a natural science that involves study of matter and its motion and other concepts such as energy and force.

PHYSICS TEST QUESTIONS

Here are some physics test questions along with their answers that may be helpful for appearing in the tests.

Q1. How will you distinguish between a plane mirror, a concave mirror and a convex mirror without touching them? Explain.

Answer: We shall see our own image through all the mirrors.

(i) If the image is erect, of the same size as the object and is formed as far behind the mirror as object is in front of it, then the mirror is a plane mirror.

(ii) If the image is always erect and diminished in size, then the mirror is a convex mirror.

(iii) If the image is erect and magnified, when our face is close to the mirror, then the mirror is a concave mirror. (When our face is at a large distance from the mirror, the image appears to be inverted.)

Q2. Why do we prefer a convex mirror as a rear-view mirror in vehicles?

Answer: We prefer convex mirror as a rear-view ...
... mirror in vehicles, since it produces an erect image. Also, that it has wide field of view and thus, enables the driver to see much larger area.

Q3. Why do different colours deviate through different angles on passing through a prism? Which colour suffers least deviation on passing through a prism?

Answer: The different colours travel through glass prism with different speeds, hence they deviate through different angles. Red colour deviates by the least amount because it travels fastest through the glass.

Q4. Why do stars twinkle?

Answer: The twinkling of stars is due to atmospheric refraction. The starlight on entering into the earth's atmosphere undergoes refraction continuously. Since the physical conditions of the atmosphere are not stationary, the path of rays of light coming from the star keeps on varying slightly. Thus, the apparent position of the star fluctuates and amount of starlight entering into the eye flickers, producing twinkling effect.

Q5. What is meant by the statement, "Potential difference between points A and B in an electric field is 1 volt"?

Answer: Potential difference between two points A and B in an electric field is said to be 1 volt if 1 joule of work is done in moving a charge of 1 coulomb from point A to point B.

Q6. Explain different ways to induce current in a coil.

Answer: (i) Induced current in a coil can be produced either by moving the coil in a magnetic field or by changing the magnetic field around it.

(ii) It can also be produced by changing the strength of current in the coil.

(iii) It can also be produced by changing the area of the coil or by changing the relative orientation of the coil.

(iv) In general, induced current in a coil is produced by changing the magnetic field lines (i.e.., magnetic flux) associated with the coil.

Q7. What is the function of an earth wire? Why is it necessary to earth metallic appliances?

Answer: When the live wire touches the metal casing of an electrical appliance, the electric current flows from the body of the appliance to the earth through the copper wire. As the earth offers no resistance to the flow of current, so large current passes through the circuit. This large current causes heat in the circuit and hence the fuse in the circuit melts. The earthing saves the user from electric shocks in case of short-circuit and hence it is necessary to earth metallic appliances.

Q8. Mention any four areas where solar cells are being used as a source of energy.

Answer: (i) Solar cells are used as a source of energy in man-made satellites.

(ii) They are used in watches and calculators to supply desired energy.

(iii) They are used for supplying electric power to lighthouses and off-shore oil drilling big platform.

(iv) They are used for producing electricity for street lighting, water pump and running TV and radio sets in remote and isolated areas.

Q9. What are the qualities of an ideal source of energy?

Answer: (i) It should be capable of providing an adequate amount of energy.

(ii) It must be convenient to use and easy to store.

(iii) It should be capable of delivering desired quantity of energy at a steady rate over a long period of time.

(iv) It should be accessible for extraction with latest technology.

(v) It should be economical.

(vi) It should be eco friendly.
