Core i3 processors from the Sandy Bridge family have two distinguishing features. First is the Intel Core i3 processor price. At this point and until Intel rolls out Pentium processors based on the new micro architecture, these would be the junior LGA1155 processors. They set the minimal price for entering the Sandy Bridge club at $120-$140.

The second distinguishing feature between Core i3 and the higher-end models is the dual-core design. Although the second-generation Core solutions are manufactured using the latest 32 nm process, the introduction of four computational cores into inexpensive processors would be a waste for Intel. It is AMD, who have to resort to a measure like that, because right now they do not have any other way of making their inexpensive processors fast enough.

As for Intel, they have no problems with the performance of their individual processor cores, so CPUs with two computational cores inside is a pretty normal occurrence for contemporary mainstream and entry-level systems. Especially, since they also have the remarkable Hyper-Threading technology at their disposal, which allows each ...
... of the cores to execute two threads at the same time. And by the way, dual-core design is used successfully not only in the Core i3 series discussed today. Similar Sandy Bridge Intel processors are popular in mobile computer systems, even in the mainstream segment, where they are called Core i5 and even Core i7.

The budget-oriented and multiplier-locked Core i3-2120 is the chip that has to take the reins from the underrated Core i3-540. It is a dual-core 3.3GHz processor with Hyper-Threading, and thus can process up to four threads at a time. This CPU obviously features an integrated GPU in the form of the Intel HD Graphics 2000. This is the lower-end of the two IGP variants, it features 6 Execution Units (EUs) and a graphics frequency that starts at 850Mhz but can dynamically increase up to 1.1GHz. Also worth noting is the i3-2120’s 65W TDP, courtesy of the modern 32nm manufacturing process, which makes this model very well-suited for a small form factor (SFF) enclosure.

Much like the i5-2500K it does not support Hyper-Threading. However, unlike the aforementioned K-series chip, it does regrettably feature a locked CPU multiplier. This processor resides at the lower end of Intel's Socket 1155 Sandybridge series product line and is slightly faster than the i3 2100 due to the 2x multiplier difference. The Core i3 2120 is built using Intel's 32nm HKMG process. Die size on the Core i3 2120 is 131mm2 with 504 million transistors under the lid. Unlike the 2500 and 2600K processors, this is a dual-core processor that supports Hyper-Threading, dual-channel memory, and runs at a clock speed of 3.3GHz via the locked 33x multiplier and 100MHz bclock. Intel Turbo Boost technology is not supported, so the 3.3GHz is all you will see unless of course you tweak the bclock for an incremental bump to around 3.5GHz.
